Blanka Šperková

Blanka Šperková was born in 1948 in Banská Bystrica (Slovakia). After studies of printmaking at the School of Applied Arts (1967) in Bratislava, she studied puppet design at the Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. She also studied in the Studio of Television and Film Graphics with Prof. Adolf Hoffmeister (1974) at the Academy of Applied Arts in Prague. She has lived in the Brno (Czech Republic) since 1974. Blanka Šperková has received several major domestic and foreign awards. Her works are included in private collections as well as in galleries in the Czech Republic and abroad.

Blanka Šperková is a versatile artist. She works as a creative artist, art jeweller, puppet and set designer as well as director of many animated films and television series of bedtime stories. She uses traditional technology and wire innovatively. To make films, she exploits the technique of paper cut-outs and puppets. The fairy tale characters in her animated films for children are happy and frolicky, replete with dynamics and expressive movement. The intense colour of images creates a rich variety of emotional feelings. The basic idea of her work for children is to seek a harmony with nature and the ultimate resolution of fairy-tale conflicts. Blanka Šperková has created her own technique of hand woven wire, made by her own fingers without any tools. The artistic metaphors of wire objects are phisolophical-psychological shortcuts of pointed ideas, expressing the exploration of diverse relationships and situations
