Kamila Štanclová

Kamila Štanclová was born on the 26^th of March 1945 in the town of Zvolen. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava, the Department of Printmaking headed by Professor Vincent Hložník. She lives and works in Bratislava.

In the beginning the artist did not focus on the illustration for children's books. As the wife of Slovak illustrator Dušan Kállay she shares his poetics, but with her own female dimension in gouache technique, her understanding of space and expression of figures. The highly painterly character of her illustrations fits together with her husband's approach to children's books and the context of their common project of the Fairy Tales by Andersen. Colour, composition, the purposeful exaggeration of figures and artistic elements endow the scenes with a massive quality, stressing the seriousness of the story's message. Her painterly gesture is grandiloquent, courageous, and yet, at the same time, tender and dynamic. The complete work of the Fairy Tales by Andersen illustrated by these two outstanding representatives of Slovak illustration is a monumental work of art both at home and abroad, and the artists have already had the opportunities to present it in numerous independent exhibitions in various countries. It was created for the 200^th anniversary of Andersen's birth, contains over a thousand original works of art and was published in three volumes in Prague, Paris and Bratislava.
