Emanuele Luzzati

Emanuele Luzzati was born on the 3rd of June, 1921 in Genoa. In 1938 he moved to Switzerland with his family due to fascist racial laws adopted by Mussolini government. Luzzati studied in Lausanne where he obtained the degree at the Academy of Fine Arts.  After the 2nd World War Luzzati returned to Italy where he started to make set design for various theatres (Milan, Genoa). Soon he was invitated for cooperation with renowned theatre and opera ensambles abroad (London Festival Ballet, Chicago Opera House, Vienna State Opera, Glyndebourne Festival), mainly at music productions of Mozart and Verdi. Luzzati was also engaged in children´s literature illustration, painting, sculpture and ceramics. The predominant role in Luzzati´s animation work was played by a long-term cooperation with canematographer and director Giulio Gianini that started in 1960 at their first short film I paladini di Francia / The Paladins of France. He was nominated for Academy Awards for two of his films, La gazza ladra / The Thieving Magpie (1965) and Pulcinella (1973). Emanuele Luzzati died on the 26th of January, 2007 in Genoa.
