Jiří Barta
Biography
In 1975 he graduated from the Applied Arts and Crafts College (VŠUP) in Prague, Studio of Film and Television Graphics. Since 1979 he had taught at this college for many years, first as an assistant tutor, later as a head of the department film and TV graphics, in 2001 he was appointed a professor. Since 1982 he had worked at the Short Film Prague – Jiří Trnka´s Studio. From 2010 he has taught at the Faculty of Arts and Design, University of West Bohemia in Plzeň. In recent years, Jiří Barta has focussed on creation to order, for example, animated advertisements, MTV logo, etc and he cooperates with theatres and film productions as well.

Jiří Barta, a film director and designer, is one of the most remarkable representatives of the present Czech school of animated films. His works are characterized by searching for new topics, and artistic and technological ways. Each topic he picks out seems to be also a challenge of applying a new solution. In addition to relief puppet animation (Riddles for a Candy) and 3D animation (The Pied Piper of Hamelin), Barta also applies spot animation technique (Disk Jockey; A Design), computer animation (Sweet Porridge) as well as live action (The Lost World of Mittens; In the Attic, or Who Has a Birthday Today?). With virtuosity, he uses elements of various genres, from satire to horror. In each of his films, we find more than one semantic level, with ever present sense of playfulness and creative fantasy. His work has regularly taken Grand Prize at prestigious film festivals.
