Piotr Dumała
Biography
Piotr Dumała was born 1956 in Warsaw. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw where he studied stone sculpture, later animation at the Department of Graphic Art under the renowned director, Prof. Daniel Szczechura. Since 1984 he has focused on cooperation with the Studio of Miniature Films in Warsaw and SE-MA-FOR Studio in Lódž. He also makes films for television. He has worked as a stage designer for an acted film. He lectures animation at the Film and Drama School in Lódž. His films have received awards at many prestigious world festivals (Cracow, Mannheim, Lagow, Oberhausen, Los Angeles).

Piotr Dumała - director, scriptwriter, animator and artist, one of the leading representatives of Polish animated film. His early short cartoon films Little Black Riding Hood (1984) and The Nervous Life of the Cosmos (1986) immediately attracted attention on account of their black humour with elements of horror film and a brilliant artistic abbreviation. His topmost feature films including Franz Kafka (1991) and adaptations of Dostoevsky´s work The Gentle One (1985) and Crime and Punishment (2000), overall created by the technique of scratched-out plaster of Paris blocks, are strongly emotional and intimate works of art which provide deep probes into the secret corners of the human soul. Piotr Dumała thinks like an artist, his animation is on the border between films and poetry forming a kind of new, exacting structure. Dumała firmly believes that the role of filmmaking is to arrange dream-like images and visions into an exact composition with a precise content.
