Adolf Born

Adolf Born was born on June 12, 1930 in České Velenice. After graduating from the Charles University, Pedagogical Faculty  in Prague, he continued his art studies at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design and later at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague where he graduated in 1955. He began as a cartoonist and illustrator, mainly engaged in cartoons for popular weekly magazines Dikobraz (Porcupine) and Mladý svet (Young World). Due to comeback of censorship into media in the early seventies he had later concentrated more onto the areas of animated film, book illustration and graphic print. In 1972 he started a long-term cooperation with the writer Miloš Macourek and animator Jaroslav Doubrava. Adolf Born has gained numerous awards for illustrations (Highly Commended H. C. Andersen IBBY 1986, Golden Apple BIB 1979), cartoons (The Cartoonist of the Year - Montreal 1974), prints as well as animated films at festivals home and abroad (JiriTrnka Award - Zlín 1979). He lives and works in Prague.

Adolf Born, one of the most well-known Czech artists - painter, graphic artist, illustrator, animator, cartoonist and costume designer. A number of films have been shot with his art work. He has realised numbers of remarkable pictures with director Václav Bedřich: The Double (1965), The Horny Princess (1967), Mr. Arno's Treasure (1967); with Stanislav Látal and Miloš Macourek the morality Too Much Tenderness (1968); with František Vystrčil grotesque The Scissors (1970). The team of authors Macourek-Born-Doubrava has realised a great number of original satirical moralities, i.e. From the Life of Children (1977), The Complex (1981) as well as popular cartoon series for children on Mach, Šebestová and the severed earphone (1976-1983) and on the little monkey Žofka (1986-1988). In the full-length film Robison Crusoe, the Sailor from York (1981) directed by Stanislav Látal came to life Born's graphic designs both in classical puppets and in paper-cut technology. Authentic humor, brilliant characterisation, exaggeration and joyful expression of his graphic hand-writing address several generations giving smile and understanding to small and grown-up viewers.
