Founders of Slovak Illustration

Slovak children´s books have only started to form after 1918. Efforts to develop Slovak book publications concentrated in Martin, the cultural centre at the time thanks to the national institution Matica slovenská and printing machines. Martin Benka, Andrej Kováčik, Jaroslav Vodrážka, Ján Hála and Karol Ondreička laid the foundations of Slovak children´s illustration and began to work systematically on book illustrations for Matica slovenská since the 1920s.
