The exhibition by graphic artist, painter and illustrator Katarína Vavrová, From the Books of My Heart, at the Piešťany Municipal Library – in collaboration with BIBIANA, the International House of Art for Children, and the KUW Gallery – showcases her illustrative work from the last ten years. Just as her teacher – Professor Albín Brunovský – had a close affinity with poetry, particularly that of the Trnava Group, which he knew and understood, so too does his most successful pupil have a close affinity with poetry and is able to transpose it brilliantly into the visual arts. This is also evident in this exhibition, which presents illustrations from twelve books, nine of which are collections of poems by her favourite poets. Among the authors dear to her heart, we can admire at the exhibition – retold through the language of colours and lines – Charles Baudelaire, Milan Rúfus, Karel Jaromír Erben, Maša Haľamová, Jan Skácel and a selection from Ľubomír Feldek. A selection of poems by Miroslav Válek was published a few days ago and is already on display here. A great rarity and an exclusive treat for art lovers and bibliophiles is the opportunity to see illustrations from two as yet unpublished books. Máj by Karel Hynek Mácha will be published during the exhibition, whilst the poems of Jaroslav Seifert, the only Czechoslovak winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature (1984), will be published before Christmas. With her illustrations from the book Slovak Songs, she made it onto the shortlist of the International Jury at the Bratislava Biennial of Illustration 2025 and, at the end of 2025, she was awarded the Ľudovít Fulla Prize for her lifetime contribution to children’s illustration.
