Igor Rumanský

Igor Rumanský was born on the 10^th of March 1946 in the town of Demänová. He studied at the Secondary School of Applied Arts in Bratislava and then at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava – painting under the supervision of Professor D. Milly as well as printmaking and book illustration under the supervision of Professor V. Hložník. He died on the 10^th of August 2006 in Bratislava.

Igor Rumanský was an outstanding representative of Slovak fine arts. He was a Professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava, at the Department of Printmaking. Beside illustrations he focused also on printmaking, especially on woodcut and wood engraving, stamp art, bookplate, drawing and painting. He illustrated about one hundred and fifty books, most of them where written by Milan Rúfus. His illustrations represent poetic tendencies. He saw the illustration as a picture, where he tried to achieve visual and spiritual thrill. He used both classic printmaking techniques and combination of drawing and varying colours.

His drawing is clean and soft, showing his effort for his own artistic language. His illustrations masterly express his own emotions and at the same time capture the essence of the illustrated text.
