Martina Matlovičová-Králová

Martina Matlovičová-Králová was born on the 24^th of December 1975 in Bratislava. She studied at the Secondary School of Applied Arts in Bratislava and later graduated from the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava, the Department of Animation. Her major focus is the book illustration.

Martina Matlovičová–Králová was awarded a Golden Apple at the Biennial of Illustrations Bratislava 2009. The artist is excellent in capturing moods, the moods of hers and the moods of ours. Creating her illustration she can read the text and shift it onto another level. She does not decorate the book, but she lives in it, like her figures do. For example, while her images are deliberately more colourful and naïve, vigorous and obvious in the book Drevený tato (Wooden Dad), in the book Tracyho tiger (Tracy's Tiger) there are more codes and metaphors, dignity and elegance in her illustrations. Martina Matlovičová–Králová belongs to the young generation of illustrators. Her work is extraordinarily energetic, innovative, fresh and unique. She combines painting with collage. Her colours are always shiny, rich, determining and dominant. However, she has also an impeccable sense of detail which is always proper and completes the composition of the illustration. Using her special sense of humour, irony and exaggeration, the artist stylizes her figures and purposefully shows their infantile playfulness as a contrast to their wittiness. The illustrator sees the book as a complex and her work is characteristic by innovative thinking and a courageous creativity.
