Viera Bombová

Viera Bombová was born on the 14^th of April 1932 in the village of Buclovany near the town of Bardejov. In 1950-1956 she studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava under the supervision of Professors L. Čemický, P. Matejka and D. Milly. She graduated from the Department of Printmaking and Illustration, headed by Professor V. Hložník. Her main focus is illustration.

Viera Bombová was awarded Golden Apple at the Biennial of Illustration Bratislava in 1967 for her illustrations for the book Obrova stupaj (Giant's Footprint) and in 1969 for her illustration for the book Janko Gondášik a Zlatá pani (Janko Gondášik and Golden Lady). The illustrator is inspired by folk customs and folklore rich with colours and ornaments. Folk costumes, embroidery, lace, painting on glass, wood-carving are obvious sources of her inspiration; they are present in her collage-like illustrations in fragmentary images transposed into decorative form. The illustrator deliberately stylizes her figures, arranges them in layers, piles them up, using a technique of wax pastel, „dressing“ them in bright colours sometimes and other times in deep colour tones, achieving a poetic impression of a scene as a whole. She combines dry point with aquatint and experiments and uses non-traditional procedures and materials (rubbing, batik, blue and white print, gingerbread shapes), engraves the line and „shapes“ the imaginative vision to the utmost briefness, creating a kind of a new ornament. This figural decorativeness has a dynamics and at the same time a harmony of its own and the colouring is obvious and evident in all diapason of its expression options. In her illustrations she interprets also children's literature from foreign cultures – Indian, Polynesian, ancient China, Philippine, Vietnamese fairy tales and presents them to Slovak children. It is  important to admit the general validity of the illustrator's artwork, or maybe better to say, its prevailing modernity. Even though she is inspired by traditions, she succeeded in shifting it by her elegant stylization to modern understanding not only the former period of the end of '60, but all the period up to nowadays. Her illustrations obviously come off best also in current spectrum of various types and techniques, expressions and poetics. In the second half of the last century the illustrator had to bring an outstanding breakthrough even without using distinctly new means. The illustrator just shifted the „old“ ones onto a different level and with a witty use of classic conjured up modernism.

Illustrations are not just of a decorative character, they have got their seriousness, because they have got their expressive depth. They have got their dignity, because the artist did not even allow any other approaches.
