Dušan Kállay

Dušan Kállay was born on the 19^th of June 1948 in Bratislava. In 1966-1972 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava, at the Department of the Figural Composition and Landscape headed by Professor Ján Želibský. Since 1990 has been lecturing at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava, where as a Professor he has been heading the Department of Printmaking and Book Illustration.

Dušan Kállay was awarded Grand Prix, as the only Slovak illustrator, for the book Alice in the Wonderland at the Biennial of Illustrations Bratislava 1983. From 1970 up to 1998 he exhibited his works in over one hundred exhibitions at home and abroad. Illustrations belong to his most important art. His illustrations are mosaics of creative invention from artist's imagination. A unique colouring makes the symbiosis of the real world with fantastic realms and imaginary dimensions special. Dušan Kállay is the most famous and well-appreciated Slovak artist abroad. He has illustrated over 200 books, including foreign language mutations.  Dušan Kállay's work presents the final form of an absolute artistic vision and perception of the world, created by an exceptional imagination and great sensibility, which he uses in his bizarre compositions of figures, animals and birds in a labyrinth, intertwined into endless amazing structures documenting both playfulness and mysteriousness of the artist.
