Biography

After studying Sociology, Felix Vanginderhuysen founded his own company Jekino to supply Belgian cinemas with children´s films. In 1989 he founded The European Youth Film Festival in Antwerp.  Within ECFA, the European platform for children's film professionals, Felix leaves leadership to a changing set of presidents, but as General Secretary, he permanently directs and supports the operation.

Jekino and other organizations and launched a festival. Felix persuaded filmmakers to invest their talent in children and touched a nerve with policymakers. As a distributor he tirelessly brought gems from around the world. He faught turf wars with operators, sometimes swearing, sometimes begging, to make screens available for the best children´s films. One of the first titles he brought to Belgium was Dunderklumpen (Per Ahlin). Then came many other interesting animated films from Eastren and Central Europe being introduced to Belgian market. Asked about his legacy in an interview in the ECFA Journal, Felix replied, "I have never been a creative genius myself, but I created opportunities for many people working in this field." As a distributor, Vanginderhuysen often explored the boundariers of the genre. Jekino did not shy away from including youth documentaries, socially engaged dramas and even quasi-experimental cinema alongside animated films and adolescent adventure fiction. Did you know the state of the Belgian / European children's film industry could be read for years from the appearance of one moustache? When things went bad, Felix would spend days picking at it until it grew increasingly bald. The balder the moustache, the bigger the problems. Since he retired, Felix's moustache blooms more lush and full than ever. His commitment to youth film has remained undiminished.
